***2023 FIRE SCHOOL CLASS SPOTLIGHT***

Railroad Safety and HazMat Response

Instructors - Paul Hester and Ed Dankbar Length - 4 hours

Offered time - Friday, Feb 24th starting at 8 AM

Class Description - This course will acquaint First Responders with Incident Size-up, Assessment, Proper communications and interaction with Railroad Employees, and what to expect in case of an incident. 

Instructor Bios Paul Hester - Paul Hester is the Manager of Hazardous Materials Field Operations and Emergency Response for BNSF Railway. His territory covers the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. He has been working in the Hazardous Materials industry and on Railroad projects and Derailments as a consultant and a contractor for 20 years prior to the BNSF. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and Professional Geologist in the state of Minnesota and has been with BNSF since 2015. He has also trained extensively with the Chlorine Institute, Short Line Railroad Safety Council, Illinois Fire Safety Institute (IFSI), Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) and the State Hazmat teams in his territory (ND, MN, WI).

Ed Dankbar - Ed graduated from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., with a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science. Ed started with CP as an overhead lift operator loading and unloading highway trucks and intermodal trains at CP’s Shoreham intermodal terminal in Northeast Minneapolis. Later Ed transferred to the mechanical department at CP’s St. Paul, Minn., yard as an apprentice Carmen, and worked his way up to relief foreman, and later to train servicing foreman. Ed joined CP’s Hazmat team in 2013. Ed has also been a volunteer fireman for the past 15 years.
