Commissioner Jon Godfread | North Dakota Insurance Department
Following recent severe storms in North Dakota, Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread has urged residents to assess their properties for damage and promptly file insurance claims. Godfread noted the unusual intensity of the storm, expressing condolences for those who lost their lives.
"If your home, farm, vehicle, or business sustained damage, the most important thing you can do right now is to act quickly, document everything, and protect your property from further harm," said Godfread.
The North Dakota Insurance Department advises policyholders to inspect roofs, siding, windows, vehicles, and other structures for signs of hail, wind, or water damage. They recommend documenting any damage thoroughly before making temporary repairs. Photos and videos are essential when filing an insurance claim.
Policyholders should take steps to secure their property against further losses by using materials like tarps or boards on damaged areas. Receipts for these materials or services should be kept. If a home is uninhabitable due to storm damage, homeowners or renters policies may cover temporary housing and living expenses; receipts should be retained for these costs as well.
Filing a claim quickly is advised. Policyholders should have their policy number ready and provide detailed information about the damage. It is also recommended to note the time and date of communication with insurers and keep copies of all correspondence and estimates.
Godfread warned against dishonest contractors who might appear after major storms offering quick repairs for cash or demanding full payment upfront. He advised caution against high-pressure tactics or contractors unwilling to provide written estimates and proof of insurance. Residents are encouraged to obtain at least three written estimates from different contractors and work with their insurance company to hire reputable professionals.
