The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) will start its fall mowing operations along state highways in early to mid-September. This seasonal work is done to prepare for winter and reduce the amount of snow that drifts onto roadways.

Landowners who wish to mow ditches for hay along non-interstate highways are encouraged to complete their work before the state begins mowing. Private mowing is not permitted in the medians of four-lane highways.

State law requires that hay bales be stored on the outer edge of the right of way, with large round bales kept off inslopes and at least 60 feet from the roadway. All hay stored on the right of way must be removed by November 1.
