The North Dakota Game and Fish Department will continue its Hunter-Harvested Surveillance program during the 2025 hunting season, focusing on testing deer for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in select areas of the northwest region of the state.
According to the department, sampling will take place from deer harvested in units 3A1, 3A2, 3A3, 3B1, 3B2, 4A, 4B, and 4C. Hunters outside these units may still have their deer tested by bringing them to a Game and Fish district office, using a deer head collection site, or utilizing a self-sampling kit.
The department advises hunters to leave the heads of adult or yearling deer at designated collection locations listed on its website at gf.nd.gov. Fawns and deer that were shot in the head are not eligible for testing. For those who want to keep the heads of their harvested animals, they can visit a Game and Fish district office during business hours for sampling.
