North Dakota Forest Service issued the following announcement on April 2.
Increased activity of our many wood boring pests draws the interest of several resident and migratory bark foraging birds. The downy, pileated, and red-bellied woodpeckers are year-long residents and can be found foraging in the dead of winter in our forest canopies. As we move in to late-spring and early-summer, we can add the migratory species like the red-headed woodpecker and the red and white-breasted nuthatches. The activity of these insectivores is one of our best guides to find the elusive and invasive emerald ash borer.
