Rolling out the red carpet for Shrine Bowl 2022 players, coaches, and fans.
Mayville State University will have the distinct honor of hosting the North Dakota Shrine Bowl on June 18, 2022. We have hosted the athletes and coaches during their camp the week prior to the game for the past several years, but for the first time ever, we will also host the game at Jerome Berg Field. This is fantastic news not only for the university, but also for the community. This event will bring many to town, which should be a big boost for the local economy.
The North Dakota Shrine Bowl has been in existence since 1974. Each year, 76 11-man players and 56 9-man players are selected to play in the 11- and 9-man games. There are East and West teams. Up until 1998, there was only an 11-man game and the teams were North vs. South. Players are chosen through a selection process conducted by the North Dakota Coaches Association.
The Shrine Bowl has three primary goals. The first is to honor high school athletes who have not only excelled on the football field, but who also display the qualities of young men with high character. Second, the Shrine Bowl is held to promote awareness and raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. There are currently more than 350 children throughout North Dakota who are active patients in the Shriners Hospitals. The hospitals are committed to providing the best care for children in the specialty areas of orthopedics, burn care, spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The third goal of the North Dakota Shrine Bowl is to inform the public about the charity and seek out more children who the Shriners may be able to help.
Players and coaches will check in to the residence halls at Mayville State at around noon on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Throughout the week, they’ll stay in the campus residence halls, and MSU Dining Services will provide meals for them. Mayville State will be responsible for providing recreational and entertainment activities for all players and coaches on the evening of June 17.
During the camp, Mayville State practice fields, Jerome Berg Field, various meeting rooms, locker rooms, and equipment will be used. Two athletic trainers provided by Mayville State, as well as 10 Comets football representatives, will be assisting.
It is a tradition for the Shriners to host a banquet for players, their families, and members of the Shrine prior to the Shrine Bowl. In 2022, that banquet will be held at Mayville State’s Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. We expect anywhere from 600 to 625 people to attend the banquet. The meal will be prepared and served by Mayville State’s Dining Services.
We anticipate that a number of people will be looking for overnight housing, so rooms at the Mayville Hometown Inn have been blocked off specifically for those associated with the Shrine Bowl. Reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be made by May 1.
Concessions at the game will be provided by Mayville State. With the large number of fans expected, food trucks will also be brought in to help with food accommodations.
We are eager to welcome our Shine Bowl guests to Mayville State University next summer. It will be exciting to pack “the bowl” at Jerome Berg Field. With limited permanent seating, we will be encouraging all spectators to bring their blankets and lawn chairs and gather around “the bowl” for what promises to be a great afternoon and evening of football in an atmosphere with a nostalgic kind of feel.
We invite the greater Mayville-Portland community to join us in extending the warmest possible welcome to all Shriners and Shrine Bowl players and coaches and their families to Mayville-Portland and Mayville State University. An opportunity to draw a large group like this does not happen often. It will take a team effort to make this a success, and we look forward to partnering with our community friends to make it happen.
