WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) delivered remarks at the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) annual legislative conference. His comments focused on benefits of the Lake Access Keeping Economies Strong (LAKES) Act, a bipartisan bill he introduced to improve outdoor recreation facilities managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

“Many of us keep unique personal reasons for appreciating our country’s natural waterscapes. As a 14th generation pilgrim whose ancestors came to America on the Mayflower, I like to say boating is in my blood,” said Senator Cramer.
“On a larger scale, the recreational boating industry is a significant economic driver for the state. It was great to speak with NMMA members and thank them for their support of the LAKES Act. Our legislation will address certain challenges they face at the federal level and empower their work.”
Senator Cramer is Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee and the top Republican on the Armed Services (SASC) Seapower Subcommittee. In these capacities, he engages with a range of marine manufacturing issues – from recreation and water jurisdiction on EPW, to naval capabilities on SASC.

Click here for a one-pager on the LAKES Act. Among other things, it would mitigate discrepancies among federal agencies by allowing the USACE to:
- Retain 80% of recreation fees collected onsite for operation and maintenance at that location.
- Enter into cooperative agreements with local nonprofits.
- Handle partner-collected fees and return them to the partner jointly managing the recreation facility to reinvest onsite.
